After a successful first showing at *SCAPE in May, In the Interim, a Project 50/100-supported initiative, is now transferring to Artistry Cafe for a month-long exhibition! Another chance to catch the photography project by youth from Lengkok Bahru if you missed it previously!
‘You see, we didn’t want the children to be exhibits. We didn’t want people to look at our photos and say “Oh, look at those poor kids.” We certainly did not want poverty porn. Lengkok Bahru is an area with a lot youths. These youths are brimming with energy and they can definitely speak for themselves. This project shows that they do have something to say. They certainly do have a unique, experimental and raw way of expressing themselves. We wanted them to feel empowered. We provided them with the film cameras and they told the story by documenting their own lives. They are the stars.’
~ Shamil Zainuddin, one of the project’s founders
